Tonye’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1986 while studying architecture at the University of Lagos. Alongside his course mate, Ikenna Chukwueke, he built architectural models for leading firms including Towry Coker and Associates and Suji Dosekun and Partners. He then moved to Brazil where he contributed to urban planning projects including the development of Palmas, the capital of Tocantins. He later joined EMSA, a Brazilian civil engineering firm where he managed World Bank-funded infrastructure projects in Nigeria.
In 1996, he co-founded Sahara Group, which has grown into one of Africa’s largest energy conglomerates, spanning 42 counties and over 4,000 employees. Under Tonye’s leadership, Sahara achieved notable international expansion, establishing a reputation for transparency and innovation.
Tonye represented Sahara Group at the World Economic Forum, where he contributed to the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI). He also served on advisory boards for the United Nations Sustainable Development Group Fund and the World Bank’s Expert Advisory Council on Citizen Engagement. His global influence continues to shape perceptions of Nigeria as a destination for ethical investment and forward-looking enterprise.
Today, Tonye is dedicated to shaping forward‑facing industries and empowering future generations.
He mentors and invests in youth-led companies across Nigeria, drawing on his experience as a successful business builder. His portfolio spans data centres, artificial intelligence, cyber-security and natural resources ventures—building businesses that will help transform Nigeria’s future and create employment opportunities for its growing population.
