Tonye Cole Biography A Life of Vision Integrity and Impact

Tonye Patrick Cole mni is a Nigerian entrepreneur, philanthropist, politician and ordained minister. He is best known as the co-founder and former Group Executive Director of Sahara Group, a leading energy and infrastructure conglomerate. He ran for Governor of Rivers State in 2019 and 2023, representing the All-Progressive Congress Party. Today, Tonye is focused on building a better Nigeria – one that is globally respected, economically diverse and inclusive of its next generation. While his work is rooted in his home: Rivers State, he is dedicated to the long term prosperity of Nigeria.

Early Life and
Education

Born in Port Harcourt in 1967, Tonye Cole was raised in a family committed to public service. His father, Patrick Dele Cole, was a newspaper executive and diplomat, serving as Nigeria’s ambassador to Brazil. Tonye attended Corona School and King’s College in Lagos, followed by King’s School Ely in the UK. He earned a degree in Architecture from the University of Lagos, studied Portuguese at the University of Brasília and completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

Career and Entrepreneurship

Tonye’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1986 while studying architecture at the University of Lagos. Alongside his course mate, Ikenna Chukwueke, he built architectural models for leading firms including Towry Coker and Associates and Suji Dosekun and Partners. He then moved to Brazil where he contributed to urban planning projects including the development of Palmas, the capital of Tocantins.  He later joined EMSA, a Brazilian civil engineering firm where he managed World Bank-funded infrastructure projects in Nigeria.

In 1996, he co-founded Sahara Group, which has grown into one of Africa’s largest energy conglomerates, spanning 42 counties and over 4,000 employees.  Under Tonye’s leadership, Sahara achieved notable international expansion, establishing a reputation for transparency and innovation.

Tonye represented Sahara Group at the World Economic Forum, where he contributed to the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI).  He also served on advisory boards for the United Nations Sustainable Development Group Fund and the World Bank’s Expert Advisory Council on Citizen Engagement.  His global influence continues to shape perceptions of Nigeria as a destination for ethical investment and forward-looking enterprise.

Today, Tonye is dedicated to shaping forward‑facing industries and empowering future generations.

He mentors and invests in youth-led companies across Nigeria, drawing on his experience as a successful business builder.  His portfolio spans data centres, artificial intelligence, cyber-security and natural resources ventures—building businesses that will help transform Nigeria’s future and create employment opportunities for its growing population.

Philanthropy and Faith

Tonye Cole’s philanthropic work is deeply rooted in family values and a lifelong commitment to giving back.  As co-founder of Sahara Group, Tonye established the Sahara Group Foundation to drive social impact across Nigeria.  In 2020, he founded the REACH Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation focused on delivering food, medical support and essential supplies to vulnerable communities in Rivers State.  Under Tonye’s leadership, REACH played a pivotal role in the Rivers State Covid-19 response, distributing aid and equipping hospitals with ventilators and ICU beds. The foundation continues to expand, guided and financially supported by Tonye Cole.

Tonye is also a mentor and advisor to youth-focused initiatives including Enactus and Slum-2-School, reflecting his dedication to empowering future leaders.

As an ordained minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Tonye integrates faith and leadership, believing that integrity and service should underpin public life.

Political Journey

In 2018, Tonye stepped down from executive roles to enter politics, contesting the governorship of Rivers State under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was the party’s candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections. His political vision centres on governance, youth empowerment and economic diversification: key pillars for Nigeria’s long-term success.

Tonye also intends to run for Governor of Rivers State under the All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Personal Life

Tonye is married to Dr Sylvia Cole and is a father of three. He recently celebrated the birth of his first grandchild. His personal life reflects the values he champions publicly: faith, resilience and a commitment to building a legacy of service.
