Tonye’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1986 while studying architecture at the University of Lagos. Alongside his course mate, Ikenna Chukwueke, he built architectural models for leading firms including Towry Coker and Associates and Suji Dosekun and Partners. He went on to begin his professional career with Grupo Quatro SA in Brazil, where he contributed to major urban planning projects, notably the development of Palmas, the capital of Tocantins. He later joined EMSA, a Brazilian engineering firm, as Director of Operations in Nigeria, overseeing World Bank‑funded infrastructure projects.
In 1996, he co-founded Sahara Group. The company evolved from fuel trading to a fully integrated energy business, covering upstream, midstream, downstream, power and infrastructure.
Today, Tonye mentors, supports and invests in Nigerian businesses and startups. With the benefit of his support and experience, Nigeria’s brightest business leaders are growing the country’s next business success stories. This work spans data centres, AI, cyber-security, mining, technology and telecoms.
